Settling Your Child into Care for the First Time

Starting childcare is a big step for both children and families! It’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves as your little one begins their journey at Cove Early Learning.

Here are a few simple tips to help make the transition smooth and positive:

1. Talk About It

In the days leading up to their first day, talk with your child about what to expect — new friends, fun activities, and caring educators. Read picture books about starting childcare and share how exciting it will be.

2. Orientations

Centre Orientation sessions are an important first step in helping children and families feel comfortable and confident in their new environment. They give families the chance to meet educators, explore the space, and build trust before the first day of care. Ensure to at least complete 1 to 2 orientations before your child starts with us to ensure smooth and positive transition into care.

3. Bring Something Comforting

A familiar comfort item, like a small blanket or soft toy, can help your child feel safe and secure while they adjust to their new environment. We love having access to family photos as well to really embed a strong relationship between your family and ours for your little one. 

4. Keep Goodbyes Short and Positive

It’s natural for children to feel upset at first. A quick, warm goodbye with a smile helps your child learn that you trust the educators and that you’ll always come back. Consistency is key.

5. Build Connections with Educators

Our educators are here to support both you and your child. We place lots of importance in ensuring details about your child’s routines, interests, and comfort strategies have been shared with us. This helps us provide care that feels just like home.

6. Be Kind to Yourself

Transitions take time. Every child settles in differently, some adjust quickly, while others need a little longer. Celebrate the small wins and remember that each day builds confidence and comfort.
