Screen Time Guidelines for Preschoolers
In today’s world, screens are part of everyday life, from phones and tablets to TVs and laptops. While technology can be educational and entertaining, finding the right balance is key to supporting healthy development in young children.
At Cove Early Learning, we encourage families to take a mindful approach to screen time that supports play, connection, and wellbeing.
How Much Screen Time Is Recommended?
According to the Australian Department of Health and World Health Organization (WHO):
Children aged 2–5 years should have no more than one hour of screen time per day, and ideally less.
Screen use should always be supervised, age-appropriate, and balanced with active play, reading, rest, and family time.
Why Limiting Screen Time Matters
Too much screen time can impact children’s sleep, focus, and social skills. Young children learn best through hands-on experiences, exploring, creating, and interacting with others. Real-life play builds brain connections that screen simply can’t replace.
Quality Over Quantity
Not all screen time is equal. Choose educational, interactive, and ad-free content, and join in when possible. Watching together helps children make sense of what they see and connects the learning to real life.
Our Approach at Cove Early Learning
At Cove, we focus on real-world exploration, messy play, outdoor adventures, storytelling, and creativity. These experiences build the social and emotional skills that form the foundation for lifelong learning.
We also work with families to promote healthy digital habits that complement, rather than replace, the magic of play and human connection.
Finding Balance at Home
Keep screens out of bedrooms and during mealtimes.
Prioritise play, conversation, and family activities.
Model healthy tech habits — children learn by watching adults.
At Cove Early Learning, we believe the best learning happens through play, relationships, and real experiences. By setting healthy boundaries around screen time, we help children stay curious, connected, and full of wonder.
